Bowmanville, Ontario is located approximately 75 km east of Toronto, just east of Courtice. Early settlers to Bowmanville were attracted to the vast farmland and creeks that could be used for watermills. In 1858 Bowmanville was incorporated as a town and there is a marina located in the south end of Bowmanville on Lake Ontario known as Port Darlington.
A Scottish immigrant by the name of John MacKay opened the “Cream of Barley Mill” next to Soper Creek in 1884 used to manufacture his own cereal that would be distributed back to the British Empire.
Later towards the 20th Century, other local businesses began to open up like the Piano Factory, Specialty Paper Company, the Bowmanville Foundry and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, bringing lots of jobs to the area helping to grow the local population. Goodyear even provided its employee’s affordable housing in the 1910s. The land that the Piano Factory and Dominion Organ were built on was later donated by its owner to the town and used to build the Bowmanville Hospital.
GO Transit has begun construction to extend the Lakeshore east line and should be completed by 2024. There are two highways, Highway 401 runs near the south end of Bowmanville while Highway 407 (toll highway) runs near the North end of the city. Highways 35 and 115 connect to surrounding areas like Lindsay and Peterborough.
The public education in Bowmanville is provided by the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and oversees eight public schools and two secondary schools. While the Catholic education is provided by the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington District School Board, which oversees three elementary schools and one secondary school.
